Spotify Discovery Mode vs Playlist Promotion (2026): Is Discovery Mode Worth It?
Last checked: 8 October 2026Sources: 14, dated at the end
Discovery Mode costs nothing upfront: Spotify takes a 30% commission on the recording earnings from your selected songs’ streams in Radio, Autoplay and Mixes, and every other stream stays commission-free. It’s open only to artist teams with at least 25,000 monthly listeners, and Spotify says it raises the chance of a recommendation without guaranteeing one. Playlist promotion is paid before results, from about $1 per SubmitHub credit or €2 per Groover contact to $280 Playlist Push campaigns, and buys a curator’s listen, not a placement.

| Playlist Push | The service matches your track to curators | From $280 per campaign | Artists in the regions it serves | No results guaranteed, by its own statement |
| Marquee / Showcase | Spotify shows your release in a full-screen pop-up or a Home banner | $100–$10,000 budget, charged per click | 1,000+ streams in 28 days in a target market; Marquee also needs 5,000 monthly active listeners there | Only clicks are charged; full delivery of the budget isn’t guaranteed |
How does Discovery Mode work?
Discovery Mode is a Spotify for Artists tool that lets you mark songs as a priority so Spotify adds that signal to its recommendations in Radio, Autoplay and Mixes. Spotify’s page on how recommendations work, last updated in March 2026, says the signal “increases the likelihood of the selected songs being recommended, but does not guarantee it,” and that Discovery Mode is not active in its editorial playlists. It also says Spotify only recommends songs listeners are likely to enjoy, and takes note when a listener isn’t engaging with a song, including songs in Discovery Mode.
Campaigns run by the month. Set-up opens on the 11th and closes at 12 AM UTC on the last day of the month; the campaign starts at 12 AM UTC on the 1st of the next month. The commission covers every version of a selected song, including new versions released during the campaign. Spotify still describes Discovery Mode as a beta that isn’t available to every artist yet.
What does Discovery Mode cost?
A 30% commission on the recording earnings from streams in Discovery Mode contexts, and nothing upfront. Spotify’s support page says Discovery Mode doesn’t require an upfront budget. The commission applies to streams of the selected songs, and their related track versions, in Spotify Radio, Autoplay and Spotify Mixes (Daily, Artist, Mood, Decade and Genre Mixes) during the campaign. All other streams of the same songs stay commission-free.
Once a campaign is running, Spotify for Artists shows a performance report from its 11th day. It covers audience growth (especially new listeners), longer-term engagement such as saves and playlist adds, and streams, so you can judge whether the lift was worth the commission.
Who can use Discovery Mode?
Artist teams with at least 25,000 monthly listeners and at least 3 qualifying songs, registered in a supported country. Spotify says Discovery Mode works best with an audience of that size or above. Each song must also meet all of these:
- It has been on Spotify for at least 30 days; if there are several versions, the earliest release date counts.
- It was streamed at least 20 times in Discovery Mode contexts in the last 28 days.
- It met Spotify’s monetization rule the month before: at least 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months, plus Spotify’s unpublished minimum of unique listeners.
- It’s distributed by one of the labels or distributors Spotify lists. Some distributors offer access outside Spotify for Artists, so ask yours if it isn’t listed.
The 25,000-listener bar is the practical limit. An artist below it can’t use Discovery Mode yet, and a brand-new song can’t join a campaign until it has been out for 30 days.
How does the 30% commission work out in practice?
It depends on how much extra listening the campaign brings, because the commission also applies to streams you’d have had anyway. Say a song already gets 4,000 streams a month in Radio, Autoplay and Mixes, and a campaign lifts that to 6,000. The commission applies to all 6,000.
At the commonly cited $0.003 to $0.005 per stream, 6,000 streams earn about $18 to $30, so the commission comes to about $5.40 to $9.00 that month, in exchange for 2,000 extra streams and whatever new listeners, saves and follows came with them. If the lift is small, most of the commission is paid on streams you already had; if it’s large, the cost of each extra stream falls.
The per-stream range is an estimate, not a rate Spotify publishes, so treat the result as a guide. The monthly listeners to money calculator runs the same kind of estimate for your whole profile, and the pay-per-stream guide explains where the range comes from.
How is playlist promotion different?
Playlist promotion pays people instead of weighting the algorithm: you pay for curators to hear your song, and each curator decides. SubmitHub sells premium credits from $1 each (around $0.80 in bulk), with curators costing 1–5 credits; a premium send obliges the curator to respond within 72 hours, listen for at least 60 seconds and write 20+ words of feedback. Groover charges €2 per contact, or €4 or €6 for top curators, and guarantees a written reply within 7 days. Playlist Push runs managed campaigns from $280, sends the track to curators it matches, and states that it doesn’t offer any guarantees for results.
So the two approaches differ in where the song is heard. Discovery Mode works only in Spotify’s personalised Radio, Autoplay and Mixes; curator promotion aims at playlists made by other listeners, which show up as “other listeners’ playlists” in your Source of streams. The SubmitHub vs Groover vs Playlist Push comparison covers each platform and four alternatives.
Where do Marquee and Showcase fit?
They’re Spotify’s paid display campaigns, charged per click, for artists with at least 1,000 streams in the last 28 days in a target market. Marquee is a full-screen pop-up in the mobile app for a new release, usable within 21 days of release day, and it also needs at least 5,000 monthly active listeners in the chosen market. Showcase is a banner on Home and Browse for new or catalog releases.
Budgets run from $100 to $10,000. Since 23 February 2026, campaigns spread that budget over about 10 days for Marquee or 14 days for Showcase unless you choose faster delivery. Spotify says it can’t guarantee your full budget delivers and charges only for clicks. The cost guide sets both next to every other model.
Which option fits where you are now?
Your monthly listener count and the age of the song decide most of it.
| Where you are | What’s open to you |
|---|---|
| Under 1,000 streams in the last 28 days | The free editorial pitch, curator platforms, and promotion that reaches new listeners |
| 1,000+ streams in 28 days in an eligible market | Showcase; Marquee once you have 5,000 monthly active listeners in that market |
| 25,000+ monthly listeners | Discovery Mode for songs that are 30+ days old and qualify |
| Release week of a new song | The pitch (sent 7+ days before release), Release Radar for your followers, Marquee if eligible, curator platforms and promotion; Discovery Mode only after 30 days |
Whatever the stage, plan the dates first. The music release plan template turns your release day into a dated plan with the 7-day pitch deadline in it, and the day a song turns 30 days old is the earliest it can join a Discovery Mode campaign.

See how it worksDoes Discovery Mode take a cut of all my streams?
No. The 30% commission applies only to streams of the selected songs in Spotify Radio, Autoplay and Mixes during the campaign. Every other stream of the same songs stays commission-free, per Spotify’s own documentation.
Can any artist use Discovery Mode?
No. Your artist team needs at least 25,000 monthly listeners and 3 qualifying songs in a supported country, and each song must be 30+ days old, with 20+ recent streams in Discovery Mode contexts and a participating distributor. Spotify still calls the program a beta.
Does Discovery Mode guarantee more streams?
No. Spotify says the signal “increases the likelihood of the selected songs being recommended, but does not guarantee it,” and it still weighs whether listeners engage with the song. The performance report shows the lift once the campaign is running.
Can I use Discovery Mode and playlist promotion together?
Yes. They work in different places: Discovery Mode only in Radio, Autoplay and Mixes, and curator promotion on playlists made by other listeners. Discovery Mode isn’t active in Spotify’s editorial playlists, so a pitch to editors is unaffected.
