Spotify pitch writer: template and examples

A good Spotify pitch tells editors what the song is about, why it matters to you and how it sounds, in three or four plain sentences. Spotify’s form asks for your story and up to three genres, and distributor guides put the description limit at 500 characters. Pitch at least 7 days before release, from Music → Upcoming in Spotify for Artists.

The pitch writer runs in your browser and needs JavaScript. The template, three example pitches and Spotify’s rules are below.

A Spotify pitch template

Build the pitch in this order. Each part is one sentence, and together they fit well inside 500 characters.

  1. The song in one line: title, mood, genre and what it’s about. “[Title] is a [mood] [genre] song about [subject].”
  2. Why it matters: one true detail from your life or from writing it. Editors remember a person, not a list of adjectives.
  3. The sound: the instruments, production or collaborators that make it yours.
  4. What’s happening around the release: a video, a show, a session. Spotify’s editors asked artists in 2020 to include press, video plans and release schedules.

Indie pop · song pitch

“Paper Moons” is a wistful indie pop song about leaving your hometown and missing it before the train has even left. I wrote it on my last night in the old flat, with the boxes still taped shut. The sound: warm Rhodes, brushed drums and a choir of friends on the final chorus. Around the release: a live session video on release day and my first hometown show the week after.

Hip-hop · song pitch

“Night Bus” is a slow, late-night hip-hop song about working two jobs and still writing on the ride home. Every verse was drafted on my phone between stops. The sound: a dusty piano loop, live bass and the bus doors, which I recorded myself. Around the release: a short film of the route out the same day and two open-mic sets in October.

Melodic house · music video pitch

The video for “Glasshouse” tells the story of a night out that ends with the sun coming up over the city. Visual style: one continuous take, shot on 16 mm from dusk to dawn. The song is an upbeat melodic house track. The hook started as a voice memo of my sister humming. Around the release: a club-night launch in my city on release weekend.

Spotify’s rules for a pitch

  • Pitch from Music → Upcoming in Spotify for Artists once the song shows there, at least 7 days before release.
  • One song at a time: when the pitched song goes live, you can pitch the next. From an EP or album you pick one song.
  • Released songs, compilations and songs you’re only featured on can’t be pitched.
  • Pitched 7 or more days ahead, the song goes to your followers’ Release Radar.

Questions artists ask

How long can a Spotify pitch be?

Spotify’s help pages don’t print a number. Distributor guides in 2026, including InterSpace’s from July 2026, put the description field at 500 characters, so the writer counts to 500 and tells you how far over you are.

When should I send my pitch?

At least 7 days before release, and earlier if you can, once the song shows in Music → Upcoming. The writer shows your last day to pitch and can add it to your calendar.

What makes a pitch weak?

Hype instead of description, and no detail. Lines like “the best song of the year” or “going viral” tell an editor nothing about where the song fits. Plain words about genre, mood and story do, and the writer flags common hype words as you type.

Can I pitch a music video?

Yes, separately from the song, once video pitching reaches your account; Spotify is rolling it out gradually. The form asks about the video’s story, genre, mood, visual style and your plans. Switch the writer to Music video pitch for a draft.

Can I change my pitch after sending it?

Yes, up to release day. Spotify notes that editors may not see changes made late, so send the version you’re happy with.
